Professor Gao Wen Visited Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), and discussed in particular with Raj Reddy, University Professor of Computer Science and Robotics of CMU, Former President of Computer College of CMU, Co-Chairman of President's Information Technology Advisory Council (PITAC), from President's Information Technology Advisory Council. They signed Memorandum of Understanding on the China-US Million Book Digital Library Project , and affirmed the frame of Million Book Project.

The 1st steering committee meeting of Million Book Project was held in the Library of Beijing University. Zhao Qinping, Chief Officer of 211 Project Office of Ministry of Education, Guo Xinli Deputy Chief Officer of 211 Project Office of Ministry of Education, Professor Gao Wen, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dai Longji, Curator of China Academic Library & Information System, attended the meeting. During the meeting, Convener Group of Million Book Project was found, and it is responsible for project planning and executing.

The 3rd steering committee meeting was hosted by India. The Chinese delegacy with 9 members led by Professor Gao Wen and the US delegacy led by Dr. Raj Reddy visited India partners and the President of India.

Nnxš[) was publicized. State Development Planning Commission invested 8000 Yuan RMB in it as a support.

Chang, Senior Project Manager of International Science and Engineering Office of American National Science Foundation, visited Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Zhejiang University, had an informal discussion with members of China side, and made a high appraisal of technology platform and resource preparing of China side.

They consulted with Professor Gao Wen and Doc. Huang Tiejun about resource constructing and technology platform of Million Book Project, came to common understanding on relevant matters.

During the 2nd steering committee meeting hosted by China in Mar., 2002, the US delegacy with 12 members visited the Chinese university libraries involved in the project and the two technical centers in the Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Zhejiang University.

During the 1st ACM-IEEE Digital Library Joint Conference of Digital Library held in America, Professor Gao Wen, Professor Chen Qinzhi, as project member of US side, reported the plan and process on project, and attracted more than 300 representations' attention. So far, it is the biggest project in the world, and its system scale is over 25 times larger than American Library of Congress.
A Chinese delegacy with eight members led by Professor Pan Yunhe, president of Zhejiang University, visited US to promote Million Book Project. The delegacy visited CMU (Carnegie Mellon University), National Science Foundation and MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). The Steering Committee responsible fro project planning, policy establishing, resource providing and environment construction.

Reported in paper on the project processing to Lu Fuyuan, Director of Ministry of Education, and got the affirming and supporting. On May 29th, during the international meeting of NIT2001 held by Tsinghua University, Zhang Xinsheng and Lu Fuyuan, Deputy Ministers of Ministry of Education, who represented Ministry of Education, formally announced the China-US Million Book Digital Library Project .
